Surf Instructor Training

In addition to the Level 3 qualification required to be accredited by the BSA (British Surfing Association) as a Surf School, our Academy is also fully accredited as a Level1 Training Centre. This makes us the only centre in North Devon qualified to actually provide courses in Surf Instruction.

Nick Thorn is also the only watersports training centre in the UK that offers a combined intensive surf instructor and lifesaving course, plus the opportunity to complete the required work experience to become a qualified BSA Surf Instructor. Our 9 day courses begin with the lifesaving qualification in week 1 from Monday to Saturday, followed by the surf instructor qualification from the Monday to Wednesday in week 2. Both of our awards are valid for three years.

To book an intensive course choose a lifesaving course date (either the full NARS Beach Lifeguard or the NARS Surf Lifesaver/Surf Coach award and then choose a date for the surf instructor course which immediately follows the date you have chosen. As mentioned, surf instructor courses run from the Monday to Wednesday with the opportunity to complete the required 20 hours work experience with Harlyn Surf School.
