More about Nick Thorn

Nick Thorn

Nick Thorn has long been established as one of the World's leading Surf Lifesavers & Ironman competitors, twice holding the European Ironman title. Nick's credentials as a waterman are well documented.

With a background such as this, it was not long after Nick decided to slow down his competitive career in 2000 that Ocean Warriors was formed. This started as water safety activity coaching through Woolacombe Surf Lifesaving Club. The inspiration for this was through the 999 Bay Watch activity run through Perranporth Surf Life Saving Club.

In 2001 Nick Thorn Surf Coaching was born, with Lifeguard Training, first aid and surf school. Nick Thorn opened and ran a local surf school. This was a successful year for the surf school and lifeguard training. The Lifeguard training started slow but soon there were several courses being run with a 100% success rate. At this point Nick was competing internationally, with a first in the European IronMan, Surf Race, Board Race.

The start of 2002 was after a season in Australia competing and trying out for the Uncle Tobies Super Series and the Nutra Grain Surf Challenge, plus spent a lot of time training and surfing in some of the most spectacular training facilities in the world. He spent a lot of time training and competing with local clubs. Nick Thorn ran the local surf school and the business started and finished more successfully than the previous year.

At the end of 2002 Nick went out to Australia to compete in the International Goodwill Games. This was a great success with Nick winning the open board race, and placing 3rd in the Iron Man race.

With his success of the Goodwill games Nick took time to go out to South Africa competing and training youth squads in local surf lifesaving clubs which was an excellent adventure.

The winter period of 2003 was spent in Australia Learning and helping set up a surf Lifesaving Club in Western Australia. Nick also learnt many essential lifeguard skills and training tips from the Wollongong City Council.

As of 2006, Nick is still running his own Surf Academy, alongside his team of fully qualified and experienced surf instructors, in partnership with Hunter Boardwear. This partnership now combines both the most experienced & capable instruction team with the largest, most established surf retail company in North Devon.
